“Untrue, and unacceptable”: WHO responds to Pompeo’s claim that China “bought” WHO’s chief

World Health Organization (WHO) director-general Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus was asked on Thursday to respond to comments made by U.S. State Secretary Mike Pompeo in a private meeting with British lawmakers in London last week, where he said that China has “bought” Tedros.

Tedors said the comments are “untrue and unacceptable, and without any foundation,” adding that WHO’s sole focus is on saving lives and that the organization “won’t be distracted” by those comments.

“COVID-19 politics should be quarantined,” Tedros added.

Dr. Maria Van Kherkove, WHO’s emergencies program technical lead said that “as an American and a proud WHO employee” she sees firsthand the work Dr. Tedros and all WHO’s teams do everyday and that they are all “firmly focused on saving lives and will continue to do so.”

Dr. Mike Ryan, WHO’s executive director said that “We’re proud to be WHO and will remain so regardless of what’s said about us.”

At a private meeting in London last Tuesday, Pompeo said there was firm intelligence to show that a deal had been done to get Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus the job of WHO director-general.
