Coronavirus: Trump holds press conference as U.S. COVID-19 cases continue to climb | LIVE

U.S. President Donald Trump is expected to hold a press conference at the White House on Thursday to discuss the federal government’s ongoing response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The president announced Wednesday a deal had been reached with the Pfizer to produce 100 million vaccine doses once emergency use authorization is given by the U.S. . Food and Drug Administration (FDA), which could potentially happen this year, as well as an additional 500 million doses "shortly thereafter."

Trump was asked during Wednesday’s press conference about his controversial decision on returning to schools amid the pandemic and said he’s "comfortable" having his son and grandchildren back in schools this fall for in-person learning.

He added that his administration do have a national strategy for reopening schools safely, before adding that it’s "ultimately" up to the governors.

The U.S. remains the hardest-hit country in the world by the virus with nearly 4 million COVID-19 cases, according to John Hopkins University.
