Liberal MP Craig Kelly says Australia should take advantage of its natural coal seam to reduce energy costs, in light of the recent announcement that the budget deficit for the 2019-20 fiscal year will top $90 billion.
“We’ve got to make sure the infrastructure projects we’re building and investing in have a proper return to the nation and are not just a feel-good program," Mr Kelly told Sky News.
“We have to look at projects that will drive the productivity of the nation."
Mr Kelly said the biggest project Australia should focus on was bringing energy costs down.
“It’s not just about building a coal-fired power station for the sake of it – yes, that would create employment as well, but it’s about bringing the cost of energy down,” he said.
“It’s about taking advantage of what is Australia’s natural competitive advantage, and that is the beautiful black coal seam that runs down our western seaboard.
“Tell me what country in the world that has gone down the track of filling their grid full of intermittent generation of wind and solar has delivered them cheap energy? Absolutely none."
