It is important both sides of politics unite to defend against "malevolent" foreign forces that are trying to influence Australian domestic politics, according to Labor frontbencher Tanya Plibersek.
The comments come as Chinese President Xi Jinping described the United Front, which is a foreign arm of the Chinese Communist Party and is active in Australia, as his "magic weapon."
Ms Plibersek told Sky News it is not just China who is trying to influence Australian domestic politics.
"The head of ASIO has said very clearly that there has not been a time in history where the efforts of foreign governments to infiltrate and influence foreign politics has been as acute as it is now," she said.
"We have to defend against that.
"Just recently we (Labor) suggested an inquiry in the Senate to look at the use of social media in efforts to infiltrate and influence Australian domestic politics."
